The Jackal is an elusive assassin who makes his money by carrying out murders for top fees. When it ended, he returned to the UK unemployed and unsure of what to do next. He said: ‘I came back at Christmas ’69 completely broke. No prospect of a job, no flat, no car and no savings. Then I had this crazy, crazy idea to write a novel. ‘Everyone said it was a joke or I was mad because the chances of it even getting published are a hundred to one, a thousand even.’ Within weeks of release, the film rights were snapped up. Some of Hollywood’s biggest stars vied to play the Jackal in the 1973 film, but the role went to then-unknown Edward Fox because director Fred Zinnemann thought he could pass invisible in a crowd. I certainly didn’t have Eddie Redmayne as the Jackal on my bingo card for streaming series this year, but that’s just how it is. It’s great to see a classic novel in such a lavish production, and I think it all fits really well. The locations look great, the action sequences have been gripping so far, and the performances convincing. Like other reviewers, I don’t buy Lashana Lynch as the MI:6 agent and think she was miscast for the role. On the other hand, it’s always nice to see Charles Dance show off his acting chops. Úrsula Corberó is lovely to look at on screen, although I fear she is somewhat underused. Otherwise, a great piece of old-fashioned entertainment with plenty of mystery.
