The Jackal is an elusive assassin who makes a living committing assassinations for the highest paycheck. In The Day of the Jackal (1973), The Jackal also drives a white Alfa Romeo, albeit an earlier model. Mentioned on The Graham Norton Show: Denzel Washington/Paul Mescal/Saoirse Ronan/Eddie Redmayne/Blossoms (2024). TLDR: Redmayne nails it. Lynch was miscast. Unfortunately, the leads are not up to par with each other, which detracts from the otherwise spectacular and high-quality production. No shade on Lynch, it’s just a high bar that Redmayne has set. A more experienced actor could have provided a more believable counterpart/adversary character needed to challenge The Jackal. Overall, the story is a viable adaptation. The character development works to a certain extent, even if some things are left open in the main characters’ stories, but that could be intentional. The locations, the varied interactions and language distribution, as well as Redmayne’s character change really add a special layer to the story arc. The deception barometer is still on in the background. I look forward to seeing how Season 1 ends and how the quality is maintained or improved in Season 2. I hope Lynch relaxes to be less forced and gives a more nuanced performance to try to meet Redmayne. If so, Season 2 could be very promising.
